An Important English Medieval Oak Boarded Chest Of Imposing Proportions.

This mid 16th century oak and wrought iron chest is similar to chests of smaller scale that are found in Suffolk.

Of boarded construction ,the heavy timbers are ornamented with mouldings along the horizontal edges of the front and verticaly with a strip of gouge marks to each side including the lid,the end boards also with moulded edges running all the way down to the base of the spandrels .

Original rarely surviving spandrels with a cusped profile that are cut from matching timbers to the front board ,the end boards are full height and shaped with cut outs of gothic lancets

The strap hinges and substantial lock plate are original with a later blacksmith made hasp and some renailing to the hinges.

In good solid condition with a fantastic untouched dry surface.
